Directly face the cougar, but look at the cougars feet, not directly into their eyes, to avoid appearing aggressive. If the cougar displays aggressive behavior try to appear larger—raise your arms or open your jacket over your head. Make noise by yelling, blowing a whistle or an air horn.

Cougars are all-star stalkers, but you might be able to spot other signs that they are in the area. Keep your eyes peeled for cougar tracks (four toes, and usually no claw prints since their claws are retractable) and droppings, and scan trees for fresh claw marks.
