Question: How do you set ignition points?

Does point gap affect timing?

A wider gap will advance the timing. The sooner they open the wider the gap will be. As you increase the gap, the dwell angle will decrease because the points will open earlier. The spark occurs when the points open, hence increased spark timing.

What are the effects of improper dwell angle?

If the dwell angle is not the same for all cylinders , the result is rough running and poor fuel economy because the moment the spark-plug fires varies from cylinder to cylinder. Points opening as the lobe of the cam starts to lift the contact-breaker heel.

Does HEI add horsepower?

According to the chart, points makes more hp than stock hei and gain only a couple hp from performance hei.

Does electronic ignition add horsepower?

One of the easiest ways to increase the horsepower output of your classic car is by converting from the old, maintenance-intensive, unreliable points/breaker-type ignition to electronic ignition. Points-type ignitions are subject to wear which degrades engine performance and this wear begins immediately.

How does points gap affect performance?

A narrow gap leads to weak spark to effectively ignite the fuel-air mixture. On the other hand, a gap that is too wide might prevent a spark from firing at all or may result in misfiring at high speeds.
