Question: When did cloisonne first become popular in Japan?

The peak of artistic and technological sophistication was reached during the years 1880 to 1910, a period often referred to as the Golden Age of Japanese cloisonné enamels and superb pieces were made for display at the great world exhibitions of that time as well as for general export.

What is the history of cloisonne?

Cloisonné first developed in the jewellery of the ancient Near East, and the earliest enamel all used the cloisonné technique, placing the enamel within small cells with gold walls. In the jewellery of ancient Egypt, including the pectoral jewels of the pharaohs, thicker strips form the cloisons, which remain small.
