Question: Why firefighters get divorced?

They can suffer post-traumatic stress disorder, which puts a strain on romantic relationships. A firefighter could be physically injured at work. This also increases stress, both emotional and financial. Financial stress, in particular, has led to more than one divorce.

How many firefighters are married?

In our sample, 77 percent of male firefighters were currently married and 11.8 percent were currently divorced. This compared to 57.5 percent married in the U.S. population and 9.4 percent divorced.

What percentage of cops get divorced?

However, divorcing a police officer (and other emergency responders, male or female) may have unique issues and concerns. There are no accurate statistics on divorce among law enforcement professionals. The statistics range from 14 percent to 80 percent, and the reality is probably in between (see note #1 below).

Why is the divorce rate so high in law enforcement?

Divorce rates among police officers are high. The job itself can put strains on relationships because of the shift rotations and extended hours. Officers must often work holidays too. These hours make it hard to spend quality time, if any time, with families.

Do I have to be smart to be a firefighter?

Although firefighters do need to possess a certain degree of intelligence, there are certainly many other professions that require more brain power than being a firefighter. I consider firefighters to be of average intelligence, but very well-rounded.
