What was courting in colonial times?
Bundling, or bed courting, as it was also known, was introduced to the American colonies by the early flood of Scots, Welsh, and other European immigrants. The idea was that if a couple was seriously courting, it should spend a night together in the girls bed to ensure compatibility.
When did courting begin?
The concept of dating really began at the turn of the 20th century. Prior to the late early 1900s, courtship was a much more private, unemotional affair.
Whats a bundling bag?
Traditionally, participants were adolescents, with a boy staying at the residence of the girl. They were given separate blankets by the girls parents and expected to talk to one another through the night. Occasionally a bundling board or bundling sack was placed between the boy and girl to discourage sexual conduct.
